Geography

Estonia is located on the Baltic Sea. Just south of Finland across the Gulf of Finland, it’s Eastern border connects with Russia, and it’s Southern border is connected with Latvia. A large part of Estonia’s border with Russia is Lake Peipsi, which is 3,555 square kilometers. This border as it now stands was established by Stalin after World War II. He claimed 2,300 square kilometers for the Soviet Union, which originally belonged to Estonia as part of the Tartu Peace Treaty in 1920.

There are 1,520 islands along the coast of Estonia. The four largest islands are Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Muhu and Vormsi. These islands are a favorite vacation spot of many, especially those who come by ferry to visit from Finland. The islands are a quiet place to live, and talks of building a bridge to connect the island of Muhu to the mainland of Estonia, are met with resistance as it would increase the volume of tourists to the islands. Local people don’t want to see their peaceful way of life disturbed more than it already is by the summer tourism.

Estonia is a little bit smaller than the states of New Hampshire and Vermont together. It’s 45,226 square kilometers is made up of 43,211 square kilometers of land and 2, 015 square kilometers of water. The highest point in Estonia is Suur Munamägi in the south. It is 318 m high. There stands an observation tower about 29 m high. Most of Estonia is flat, but this souther part of the country has many small hills.
